How to compare structured settlement offers
Comparing structured settlement offers means converting each quote into an effective discount rate, then ranking by net cash after fees. A $2,000 monthly payment with 15 years remaining has a $360,000 face value. At a 9% discount rate you receive roughly $205,000; at 15%, roughly $142,000. That $63,000 spread is why comparing 3-5 buyers matters more than any other decision in the process.
Is my structured settlement offer fair?
An offer is competitive when the effective discount rate falls between 7.5% and 12% for guaranteed payments. Rates of 15% to 18% are typical of first offers made to sellers who have not shopped around. Ask every buyer to state the discount rate in writing, not just the lump sum.
Which company pays the most for structured settlements?
No single buyer pays the most on every case. Rates vary by state, face value, payment type, and how many competing quotes you hold. Note that JG Wentworth, Peachtree Financial, and Stone Street Capital share a parent company, so quotes from all three are not independent competition. Include at least one unaffiliated buyer.
What is a good discount rate on a structured settlement?
Guaranteed payments price between 7.5% and 12% for well-shopped cases. Life-contingent payments price several points higher because the buyer assumes mortality risk. Larger face values and monthly payment frequency both improve your rate.
Can I negotiate a structured settlement offer?
Yes. Written competing quotes are the only leverage that reliably moves a discount rate. Buyers expect negotiation and rarely lead with their best rate. Never accept a first offer without at least two comparisons.
How many quotes should I get before selling?
Three to five. Below three you have no reference point for whether a rate is competitive. Above five, returns diminish and the paperwork burden grows. Request all quotes within the same two-week window so the underlying rate environment is comparable.
