How the Calculator Works (The Math)

Every buyer uses this exact formula. Understanding it means no one can overcharge you.

The Present Value of Annuity Formula

PV = PMT × [(1 - (1 + r)-n) / r]
PV = Present Value (your lump sum)
PMT = Payment amount per period
r = Discount rate per period (annual ÷ 12)
n = Total number of periods (years × 12)

Your Numbers Applied

PMT = $2,500/month

r = 11% ÷ 12 = 0.9167% per month

n = 10 years × 12 = 120 months

PV = $181,488

Why Distant Payments Are Worth Less

A $2,500 payment arriving next month is worth ~$2,477 today (at 11%). That same $2,500 arriving in year 10 is worth only ~$1,335 today. The discount compounds over time — which is why longer payment streams get lower percentages of face value.

Sources & Methodology

Present value formula: Standard annuity PV calculation with monthly compounding. PV = PMT × [(1 - (1 + r/12)^(-n×12)) / (r/12)]. Same formula used by all major structured settlement buyers.
